The Kentucky
Center for School Safety cosponsors an
annual Truancy/Dropout Symposium showcasing
programs effective in reducing truancy rates
or showing promise of increasing attendance.
Other sponsors include the Office of Family
Resource/Youth Service Centers, the
Department of Juvenile Justice and the
Kentucky Association of the Directors of
Pupil Personnel. The original Symposium was
expanded to include dropout programs in
order to assist schools in meeting the new
statutory mandates for incentive funds.
School districts have used a variety of
approaches to increase school attendance,
including
family outreach and
mediation and
truancy courts. The
Junior Guard Program
initiated by the Monroe County School
District and the Kentucky National Guard
have reduced dropout rates in that district.
The
Administrative Office of the Courts
maintains data on the number of truancy
complaints filed by schools and the
data report is available on a county by
county basis.
KCSS
produced a short video that discusses the
truancy problem in Kentucky and showcases
programs in two school districts that were
successful in reducing truancy rates. The
programs featured on the video include a
truancy court project and a family outreach
program. The video is free of charge and can
be obtained by
contacting KCSS.
