General Description of the Program
Students entering the Endorsement for School
Safety Program at Murray State University
are certified teachers or administrators who
seek the knowledge and skills to provide a
safe, healthy, and nurturing school climate
to promote student learning. They will also
be skilled in strategic crisis planning,
classroom management, "at-risk" student
behavior interventions, successful teaching
in alternative settings, safe school data
analysis and crisis communications. The
endorsement is meant to extend and
complement the skills of the regular
classroom teacher or administrator.
The Endorsement for School Safety is a
twelve hour program with nine hours in the
following three required courses:

To complete
the twelve hour requirement participants
must choose from one of the following three
hour courses:
SED
657 School Safety and Classroom Management
SED
540 Procedures for Classroom Management and
Discipline
SED
651 Social Competence for Safe Environments
OR
EDU
625 Theories of Classroom Management and
Control.
Continuous Assessment
Faculty members recognize the importance of
assessing student progress in the program.
Assessment in the Endorsement for School
Safety program is systematically planned and
is continuous throughout the program
sequence. A system of check points include:
Admission to graduate study; this requires a
minimum undergraduate grade point average of
2.50 for conditional admission and a 3.0
grade point average for unconditional
admission. Mid-program checkpoint is
approximately halfway through the
endorsement program; students will meet with
the graduate advisor to discuss progress,
both strengths and areas of weakness. The
Final Review of the Kentucky Safe Educators
Standards; graduate faculty will conduct a
final review to ensure that students have
successfully demonstrated their achievement
of the Kentucky Safe Educators Standards and
program requirements.

Department of Education.
Mode of Program Delivery
Through a sequence of 12 hours of coursework
the mode of delivery will include: Lecture,
videocassettes, simulations, guest speakers,
Internet research, field observations,
discussions and small group instruction.
Faculty
The team of five full-time faculty members
will deliver the required coursework for
this endorsement. Dr. Jack Rose, of the
Department of Educational Studies,
Leadership and Counseling, will be the lead
faculty member. The other faculty members
include Dr. Tom Holcomb, Dr. Robert Lyons,
Dr. Eric Umstead and Dr. Lee Kem. |
